During the late middle Ages, monks and nuns who were physicians, as well
as healers of the soul undertook the cultivation of herbs for medical treatments
and liquors.

Over the centuries, the processes they employed to obtain herbal extracts have
changed very little. Although there have been improvements in the equipments,
the basic methodology and botanical processing has stayed the same. Today’s fast-paced demands
and the needs to ensure the highest possible quality have simply necessitated handling, storage
and manufacturing methods that are in compliance with the food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
